ARMED FORCES APPEAL BOARD OAMARU SITTING The Oamaru silting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board (Messrs J. R. Bartholomew. S.AI.. chairman. J. Price, and H. Hodgson) was continued yesterday. Mr A. N. Haggitt (Dunedin) appeared for the Crown. Tire following appeals were dealt with:— On the Grounds of Public Interest. — J. A. Bews. agricultural farmer. Main). —Release recommended: to accept work with the Oamaru Woollen Mills and serve with the Home Guard.

AMUSEMENTS Majestic Theatre—“ Kipps,” the wellknown English story, will be shown finally to-night. All the characters of this wellknown story are portrayed by English artists. Opera House.—" Private Nurse,” featuring Jane Darwell, will be shown to-night, with Tim Holt in " Thundering Hoofs,” A “ rubber matinee" will be held this afternoon after school hours.

ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Tides.—High tides to-day at the port of Oamaru will be at 11.57 a.m. and 12.23 p.m. Air Temperatures.—Highest maximum air temperature in November was 76 degrees on the 7th, and the lowest minimum was 35.6 on the 4th. The average temperatures were 63.2 maximum and 46.9 minimum, as compared with 61.3 and 44.6 in November, 1941. Correction.—Owing to a transposition in a question asked by Mr O. Stevens at Wednesday's inquest, the report of one statement by Mr C. B. Butcher (line foreman) was Incorrect. Mr Butcher’s testimony was that if he had been foreman on the job he thought he would have seen that the fuse had been taken out before allowing the deceased to go up the pole. PALMERSTON Borough Council.—The Mayor (Dr T. T. Thomas), Crs G. K. Graham, J. McGregor, L. V. Rasmussen. J. Mcßae, G. Ross, and J J. Haggie attended the council meeting held on Tuesday evening. The Sub-dis-trict Oil Fuel Controller wrote asking for the nomination of a representative on the Petrol Advisory Committee to act for all local bodies in the district. The Waihemo County Council advised that it had nominated Cr H. S. Sheat, of Bushey, for the position, and it was decided to endorse Cr Sheafs nomination.—The district manpower officer, Dunedin, advised that approval had been given to transfer scheme 13 workers from the Otago Hospital Board work at the Pleasant Valley Sanatorium to the council’s vegetable production scheme for short-term periods as required, and that a subsidy of £4 10s per man per week would be available for such work. The letter was received.—The chairman of works submitted a list of 76 occupiers of properties who have noxious weeds growing on their street frontages. The clerk was Instructed to notify the persons concerned to remove the weeds. —The Mayor reported that he had authorised the lodging of an appeal against service in the armed forces for Mr J. Forrest, undertaker, Palmerston, on the grounds of public Interest. The council approved of the Mayor’s action, and the clerk was instructed to prepare the necessary data for tlie hearing of the appeal.—At the conclusion of the meeting, the council and staff were entertained by the Mayor, who expressed thanks for the support given him during the year, and conveyed the season’s greetings. Municipal Reserves. —During the discussion on the noxious weeds problem at the council meeting on Tuesday evening, Cr J. Mcßae expressed the view that the municipal reserves were a liability to the council owdng to the fact that such lands were nearly always infested with broom and gorse. He W'as of the opinion that legislative authority should be sought to dispose of certain reserves. The suggestion was adopted, and the clerk was instructed to communicate with the member for the district, Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, and endeavour to arrange a meeting with the council during the present month.

Welcome Home to Soldiers.—Mr J. Mcßae presided at a meeting of the Soldiers’ Entertainment Committee held on Monday evening, and reported that he had communicated with the six returned men in the district, who had not yet been accorded a public welcome home. He said that December 9 appeared to be the most suitable date for the function. It was decided to hold a function in the Town Hall on that evening, and the usual arrangements of the committee for similar functions were decided upon.
