QUEENSTOWN

Obituary.—The death occurred on Wednesday last of Mrs Cathrine Philp, an old resident of Queenstown. Mrs Philp was born at Foynes (County Clare, Ireland) in 1857. Leaving her home when a young girl, she travelled in the ship Jessie Osborne to Port Chalmers, and shortly afterwards went to Arrow Junction, where she eventually married Mr Francis P. Philp,. son of Professor F. P. Philp. Mr and Mrs Philp came to Queenstown 42 years ago, and the former died 26 years ago. Mrs Philp was of a kindly disposition, and did much humanitarian work. She is survived by a family of two sons and four daughters. Salvation Army.—Brigadier and Mrs Coffin conducted brigj.it meetings last week-end on the occasion of the young people’s anniversary. Mrs Coffin addressed a meeting of women on the subject of “ The British Covenanters ” on Monday, and in the evening a children’s variety concert was held in the parish hall. Garden Fete.—The Dominican Convent held a successful garden fete on Wednesday last in the school grounds. The various stalls were slocked with a line variety of seasonable and useful goods, which sold readily. Guessing competitions and side shows helped to swell the funds. Ex-serviccmcn’s Reunion.—A combined reunion of members of the Queenstown and Arrowtown branches of the Returned Services’ Association (the first in the district since 1936) was held in Arrowtown on Saturday night. There was an attendance of over 30. including several from Cromwell, Mr M. Elliott, president of the Arrow branch, presided, and was assisted by Mr R. J. Fuller, president of the Queenstown branch. Mr W. Webb, of Cromwell, represented the parent body. The reunion proved most enjoyable, and the usual toasts were honoured, interspersed with song and story. The Tourist Season. —Since the Railways Department removed the restrictions on travel there have been numerous bookings in the local hotels and boarding houses, and practically all the available accommodation has been taken up. Unfortunately, two boarding houses are not | opening, owing principally to difficulty in obtaining staff.
