SUNDAY ENTERTAINMENT

COUNCIL’S CONDITIONAL APPROVAL After consideration in committee a decision giving conditional approval to a Sunday entertainment for troops which will include dancing was reached at the meeting of the City Council last night. The meeting was attended by the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) and Crs J. McCrae, J. Wilson, J W. Munro, M.P., M. C. Henderson, L. M. Wright, E. J. Smith, and L. J. T. Ireland. The application came from the A.N.A. Club, which forwarded a copy of the following resolution which its members had carried:—“ That the A.N.A. Club be open on Sundays from 2.30 to 5 p.m. in the afternoons and from 7 to 9.30 in the evenings, the programme to consist of games, community singing, and some dancing.” The club asked for permission to hold the entertainment. The request was granted on the condition that the approval should apply only “ during the pleasure of the council.” Pictures on Christmas Day An application by John Fuller and Sons, Ltd., for permission to screen pictures on the evening of Christmas Day was granted, the Mayor stating that the council's approval of the programme would be required. Tender Accepted Approval was given of a recommendation by the Gas Committee that the tender of Messrs West’s Gas Improvement Company, Ltd., of Sydney, for the necessary New Zealand materials, supervision, and labour inVolved in the demolition and re-erection of one bed of eight vertical retorts at the City Gasworks, at a cost of £2857, should be accepted. The committee’s report stated that a tender from the same company in the sum of £4950, covering the supply and delivery of the necessary imported materials required for this work, had been accepted by the council in August of last year.
