NEW DEPUTY AIR CHIEF

EXPERIENCE IN PRESENT WAR (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 9. Air Commodore Stanley Flamank Vincent. D.F.C., A.F.C., R.A.F., who has been appointed Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, entered the Royal Flying Corps in 1915 and saw active service in France in 1916-17. As a group captain in command of fighters he took part in the Battle of Britain, shooting down five enemy aircraft and winning the D.F.C. He was wounded in combat over France. He was subsequently promoted to air commodore and sent out to command a group of Hurricane squadrons which had then embarked for the defence of Singapore. The speed of the Japanese progress, however, frustrated the formation of the fighter group, and on arrival at Singapore Air Commodore Vincent was sent to the Netherlands East Indies, where he commanded a British fighter force, including a New Zealand fighter squadron. Air Commodore Vincent was one of the last to leave Batavia, and on arrival in Australia he was given charge of the development of the fighter defence organisation of the R.A.A.F. Since his arrival in New Zealand in June last, he has held the appointment of Assistant Chief of the Air Staff.
