A CENTURY TO EVERSON
The Otago Cricket Association’s Senior Competition was continued on Saturday afternoon, when the players were again favoured by conditions that were almost perfect. Albion-Y.M.C.A. scored a fairly easy win over Air Force, and University had little difficulty in accounting tor North-East Valley. Old Boys deieated Dunedin, and Grange also gained a victory over Kaikorai. Artillery defaulted to Carisbrook, which played an unofficial game against an Army team. At the North Ground, Albion-Y.M.C.A. (seven for 261) beat Air Force 201. a feature of the game being a bright innings by the Albion-Y.M.C.A. wicketkeeper. Everson, whose score of 139 included 25 4’s and three 6’s. Everson treated the bowling with scant respect, and at one stage of his innings he hit boundaries off eight successive balls. J. Deuchrass (45) and A. Joel (34) also batted well for the winning side. E. Powell, who took four wickets for 40, was Air Force s most successful bowler. Air Force went in at 4.12, and for the first hour and a-quart:er runs came slowly. The batsmen then began to hit out, and the last wicket fell at 6.15 with 201 on the board, the principal scorers being G. H. Tobin (47), C. F. Bird (31), and K. S. Burns (28). Bowling for Albion-Y.M.C.A., J. H. D Miller took four wickets for three. Batting first at University Oval, University put on 224 for nine wickets, NorthEast Valley replying with 96. For University, E. R. Blakely gave a good allround exhibition of batting, and hit up an attractive 63. Including three 6’s. J. Anderson (47) and C. Toomey (35) also batted vigorously. J. Cullen (four for 65) and W. Wallace (four for 52) were the mainstay of tire North-East Valley’s attack. T. Hughes (23) was top scorer for Valley. J. Anderson secured four wickets for 27.
In a low-scoring match at ; ,Tonga Park Old Boys scored 116 to Dunedin’s 99. L. Giles was the principal scorer for Old Boys and G. J. Robertson secured the fine average of six for 49. J. Young (31) made a good stand for Dunedin, and L. Groves and V. McArley, with four for 23 and three for 16 respectively, shared the bowling honours for Old Boys. Artillery was unable to field a team at Tonga Park, and an Army team from a southern camp was substituted for an unofficial match against Carisbrook. Army put on 58 and 79 for three wickets, J. Harkness (50) and J, B. Hendra (42) being the most successful batsmen. Carisbrook scored , 135 for six wickets (declared), W. McDougall being top scorer with 50,
Grange (six wickets for 225) defeated Kaikorai, (eight for 171) on the latter team’s ground. A. R. Knight (52) and S. Tonkinson (50) batted attractively for the winners, and T. Freeman contributed a useful 30. G. McGregor, who was unbeaten when stumps were drawn, compiled 61 for Kaikorai. Knight, who took four wickets for 35, was again in good form with the ball, and Freeman took four for 38. Fea (four for 53) was Kaikoral’s most successful bowler.
