GERMAN COMMANDER
STORY OF CAPTURE (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Nov. 7. “ Nobody was more surprised than I when I found I had captured the general officer commanding the Afrika Korps. I was pretty angry with him because he nearly killed my men. The German thought I was pretty rough, because he said, ‘ I am a general.’ ” This was the comment of a Hussar lieutenant, who captured General Ritter von Thoma. telling the story to a correspondent. The general was captured when one of the British staff cars in the front line was hit by a 50-millimetre shell. “ I thought it annoying,” the lieutenant said “and shouted ‘Brass up that German tank in front.’” A Sherman tank thereupon fired and set the enemy tank alight. Four figures came running out. Three of the men got away, but the lieutenant captured the fourth man. who, it was discovered, was General von Thoma.
