PUPIL PILOT KILLED SECOND MAN ESCAPES BY PARACHUTE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 8. An airman pilot in training was killed and another escaped by parachute when the aircraft in which they were engaged in solo flying practice collided in mid-air in the South Island at 2.30 yesterday afternoon. Leading Aircraftman John Oughton Mitchell, whose father is Mr F., C. Mitchell, of Tuturau, Southland, was killed instantly. Leading Aircraftman R. J. Wisker escaped by parachute. AIRCRAFT BURNT SEQUEL TO FORCED LANDING (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Nov. 7. Advice has been received that an aircraft returning from a formation flight made a forced landing near Marton at 3.30 p.m. yesterday. This was made necessary through engine failure, and, although the pilot landed successfully, the aircraft caught fire and was burnt. One wing, however, has been salvaged. The pilot, Sergeant Eric Dusna Smart, escaped uninjured.
