BURNSIDE MARKET
KEEN BEEF SALE VALUES GENERALLY MAINTAINED Values were generally maintained at the weekly market at Burnside yesterday. The beef sale was the dearest of the season, while porkers and baconors maintained high values. The prices for fat wethers were firm, while those for prime young ewes were a shade higher. Other sections maintained the levels of recent markets.
Fat Cattle. —There was a keen sale in this section, in which the entry was 2BU, compared with 330 last week. Quality was not as well represented as at previous sales, there being a limited number of prime quality ox forward. The sale opened under keen competition at an improvement of fully £2 a head on last week's rates, and this was maintained throughout until the last race, when there was a slight easing, but it. scarcely affected the average values over the whole sale. Heifers, which were also in rather short supply, met with a ready sale with prices showing an improvement of 20s to 30s a head. Values for good quality cows were also better by 20s a head, while medium and light sorts were probably, a shade under last week’s ruling rates. Top price for the day was secured by Mr John Irving, of Oamaru, with a choice quality
