_i_ -ajj, CLYDE Fruitgrowers' Association.—Mr L. J. P. Meiklejohn presided over a poor attendance of members of the Clyde Fruitgrowers' Association. Messrs E. S. Kmnaird. (director). W. H. Hinton. and V. Schaumann, delegates to the Dominion conference were present. A list of the prices of fruit cases, which showed a considerable advance, was received from the Boxmakers' Association. The price of the principal stone fruit case (7 x 7 x 18) had increased from 55s 6d to 68s 6d per 100 on rail. Reports were given by Mr Schaumann on the remits of interest tc local growers which .were discussed al the conference and by Mr Hinton on thf Employers' Union meeting. Spraying and Pruning.—Spraying if finished in this district, and in most orchards pruning is almost completed. The continued dry spell is making cultivation difficult in places which were no done in the autumn. Frosts are still being experienced, but they are not severe enough to cause damage. Farewell Social.—Mr and Mrs G L Kitto, who are leaving the district to take over a farm at Waitati, were the guests at a farewell social in the Town Hall on Saturday night. Mr Kitto has acted as secretarv of the School Committee and Horticultural Society, and is at present worshipful master of Lodge Dunstan. Personal<-Mrs Cherry, of Clyde, has received word that her son, waiter, has, been reported wounded in the Middle East Private Cherry, who left New Zealand with the second echelon, has been wounded twice previously. CROMWELL Low Rainfall.—An indication of the dry conditions ruling during recent weeks is supplied by the rainfall recorded locally. Rain fell on only three days last month, as follows:—August 19, 29 points; 21st, 50 points; 22nd, 3 points;—total, 82 points. National Day of Prayer.—ln connection with the request for a national day of i prayer, a church service was held in the Athenaeum Hall no Thursday evening. Principal Haddon and the Rev. A. B. Pywell, of Dunedin.. were the chief speakers, and they dealt at length with the movement for the new Christian Prder. Late Frosts.—Although the weather last week was fine, sharp frosts were experienced on several occasions. On Wednesday morning there was a fair t thickness of ice in many places. The frosts have been unusually hard for so late in tne season. _____________
