MERTON

Valedictory.— A pleasant evening was spent in the Mertpn Schoolroom last Wednesday night, when a large number of local residents and friends gathered to bid farewell to Miss Nancy Bowles and Mr Bowles. Mr Herd (chairman) referred to the long association of Mr Bowles with the Merton Dairy Factory, of which he had been manager for 23 years. During that time he had gained the confidence and esteem of the directors and suppliers. Miss Bowles had given valuable assistance in the social activities of the district, her services as a musician being always available for patriotic functions. Mr Herd presented Mr Bowles with a wallet of notes and Miss Bowles with a gold wristlet watch as tokens of the esteem in which, they were held. Items were contributed bv Miss Betty Payne, Miss M. Te Tau, Mr Allan Hagan, Mr Bailey, and Mr Kent. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr Cameron, and " extras" were played by Miss Bowles.
