THE WHEAT YEAR
TO END ON NOVEMBER 30 The Wheat Committee has decided to close the current wheat year on November 30 and to accept no further deliveries of 1942 wheat after that date. Any 1942 wheat carried forward by growers after November 30 will (says the Press) be treated as new wheat and delivery will not be taken before January. Though payment for the new wheat will be on the basis of 6s l£d (f.0.b., grower's nearest siding), with Jd a bushel paid into the reserve fund, this price, it was stated in Christchurch on Friday, will not actually be higher than the price which can be secured for 1942 wheat before the end of November, as all wheat sold to that date will carry the holding increments of 5d a bushel. In former years some portion of the price was held back till the end of the year, and this was usually paid in December. This year, however, as a result of growers' requests to the Minister, the full mice of the wheat was paid in the first instance, no final pavment having to be made. From the 1942 harvest (Dominion figures), the amount of milling wheat handled to September 3 was 6.833.683 bushels. The Government Statistician's estimate of the total crop was 8,600,000 bushels: 500.000 bushels has been used for seed, and 900,000 bushels for fowl feed in the South Island, so that probablv 300.000 to 400,000 bushels has still to be accounted for. All supplies of fowl feed for the North Island have been imported from Australia.
