OTAGO EARLY SETTLERS

MEETING OF ASSOCIATION The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Early Settlers' Association was held yesterday afternoon. There were present—Messrs J. W. Patton (president, in the chair). W. J. Strong, R. T. Stewart. E. Webster, A. E. Selby, A. F. Cheyne, Edgar Hazlett, J. Hope, F. W. Knight, J. Dey, C. Morris, J. F. Fraser, J. A. Paterson, G. Hutton, and W. Paterson, the secretary. The following gifts were received during the month, and votes of thanks passed to the donors: —From Mr J. F. Wilden (Tftpanui), muzzle-loading pistol, over 100 years old; Miss Melrose (Dunedin), beaded Glengarry, brought from Scotland; the estate of F. A. Cheyne (St. Clair), per Mrs Cheyne, collection of interesting books, and a number of early copies of the Witness and other newspapers; Misses Smith (London street), a number of photographs from the collection of their father, Colonel E. R, Smith; Mr H. Beeson (Egllnton road, Dunedin), panoramic view of Dunedin in 1865; Misses Edmond (Duke street), two old powder flasks, which belonged to their father; Mrs M. A. and Miss C. G. Fraser (48 Elgin road), framed portraits of their parents, Mr and Mrs Hugh Fraser, Gabriel's Gully, 1861, also a locket brooch made from some of the first gold brought from Gabriel's Gully; Miss Forsyth ("Arnha," Milton), framed portraits of her grandparents, Mr and Mrs Robert Forsyth (Milton), Crimea, 1863. The deaths of the following early settlers were recorded during the month: —John D. Thomson (Alexandra), 1863, aged 82 vcars; Mrs M. C. Cowie. Dunedin (nee Curie), 1850's, aged 89; Mrs R. Smart, Perth", Australia (nee Rowley), Lady Egidia, 1868. Two early settlers were enrolled during the month:—David Bethune. Arapuni, Sevilla, 1862; Andrew Liddell, Winton, 100 years of age, Palmyra, 1858. The following descendants were enrolled:—Mr G. E. Docherty, Outram, great-grandparents, Palmyra, 1858; Mrs I. H. Bennett, South Dunedin. father, Nounnahal, 1853; Mrs F. Ruston, South Dunedin, parents. 1860's; Mrs T. A. Holmden, Auckland, father, Lady Milton. 1864; Mrs T. A. Fraser and Miss C. G. Fraser, Elgin »road, parents, Gabriel's Gully, 1861, Mrs C. Taylor, Tomahawk, father, Robert Henderson, 1861; Mr C. A. Anderson, Riverton. great-erandDarents, Mariner, 1849; Mr G. H. Thompson, Roslyn, mother, Robert Henderson. 1858.
