COMFORTS FOR TROOPS

OVER 500,000 KNITTED ARTICLES (P A ) WELLINGTON, June 24. The secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board (Mr G. A. Hayden) states that over 500,000 garments knitted by New Zealand women from wool purchased with patriotic funds have been issued. Since the losses in Greece and Crete were made good the board has concentrated on balaclavas, scarves, and mittens for the forces in New Zealand, and this distribution is nearly completed. Several men, Mr Hayden said, had applied to the board direct for woollen comforts, but could not be supplied, as the stocks were depleted and also because the issues were made through the men's own units.
