A FAMILY TRAGEDY
BOY DRINKS POISON (PA) AUCKLAND. June 24. A verdict that death was due to poison, self-administered, was returned by the coroner (Mr F. K. Hunt) at the inquest into the death of William Mark Longbottom, aged 11, of Avondale. ~ ... The boy's mother gave evidence that her three children were playing in the back yard on May 22. William was fighting with his brother and sister, and witness took a dog collar strap and smacked William across the buttocks. She left him standing in a feed shed and returned to the house. Three minutes later he came in and said he felt sick, and that he had drunk something from a bottle in the shed. He was ill and sagging at the knees. Witness examined the bottle, and found it contained fluid for a garden spray. A doctor was called and gave medical attention, but the boy died within a few minutes. He was always a normal, healthy boy. The bottle was kept on a shelf in the shed, and it was the only poison on the premises.
