ART UNION PROFITS
GRANTS FOR CHARITABLE PURPOSES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, June 23. Mid-winter grants to various charitable and philanthropic institutions amounting to £9105 have been made by the Government from the surplus profits of the alluvial gold art unions. The grants made, which number 72, range from £750 to £25. Two societies receiving the higher grants are the New Zealand Crippled Children's Society and the Command - ery in New Zealand of the Order of St. John for branches and auxiliary organisations for relief purposes. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, expressed gratification that it had been found possible to make to institutions in need of financial help two allocations a year from the surplus art union funds, exclusive of £SOOO remitted at regular intervals to the various mayoral funds of the Dominion for the relief of urgent cases of distress. Donations to patriotic funds and subscriptions to the Liberty Loan, he said, had affected the profits of the recent art unions. "Nevertheless, it is satisfactory that the chain of grants over a number of years from art union sources lias remained unbroken, thus allowing deserving bodies to receive the support they so much need," the Minister concluded.
