MEAT PRODUCTION

INCREASED KILLINGS IN SOUTHLAND

(Special) INVERCARGILL, June 22. The final figures for the killings of fat lambs and sheep at the three Southland freezing works for the present season will probably show an increase of about 14,000 head on those for last season. This position was unexpected as recently as a week ago, but a last-minute rush of lambs to the works has brought the totals to above those of last year. Although last Wednesday was fixed as the closing date, the Ocean Beach and Makarewa works did not complete killing until Saturday, and the Mataura works will not close until next Wednesday. Although the grand total of killings will be above that for last season, there lias been a reduction in the actual lamb killings, and the decrease has been offset by an increase in the ewe and wether killings.
