Bow and Arrow Expert—The North Otago bow and arrow expert, Mr L. Rutherford, who is at present spending a holiday in Milton, was a member W a local party of deer-stalkers who visUed the Beaumont district recently. After stalking a deer for some time, an arrow was fired from a distance of about 30 yards, and the deer staggered for about another 50 yards before a second arrow brought it down. Examination of the beast showed that the first arrow had passed through it. The arrow was not f °Obituary.— The death of two well-known residents of the district occurred at Balclutha during the week-end. Mrs Charles Taylor, of Milbum (formerly Miss Mary Boyd), whose death took place on Saturday at the age of 63 years, was born and educated at Hyde, and in 1900 she married Mr Taylor. In 1903 the couple took up residence at Milburn, where they were highly respected. Mrs Taylor took a keen interest in the affairs of the Women's Institute. She is survived by her husband, six sons, and six daughters.— Mr E Lane, whose death occurred on Sundav, was the sixth son of Mr and Mrs J J. Lane, and was born at Milton in 1895. After being educated at the Toko District High School, he took up the painting trade, but later turned to farming. Some years ago he took over a farm prnnerty at Bull Creek. Glenledi. and also conducted the " Moanariri" Boarding House. In his younger days Mr Lane played Rugbv football for the Toko Football Club, and represented South Otago on several occasions. He married Miss Marguerite Maud Naylor, of Clyde. He is survived by his widow, one son, and five daughters. Patriotic Efforts.—On twp occasions recently a Paddy's market has been conducted in aid of the All Purposes Appeal, and large ' sums have been raised. At Milburn a social evening was conducted by the Milburn-Clarendon branch of the W.D.F.U., and the sum of £l4 was collected —The General Committee of the Milburn-Clarendon Patriotic Society held a meeting recently, and the secretary reported that the amounts received or promised totalled £137 18s 6d. making this year's total nearly £2OO. A house-to-house canvass was made in Milton last week bv members of the local Patriotic Society, and the amount received was approximately £135. The whole of Union street, including the business area, ha* still to be covered.
