RICCARTON NOTES
(Special) CHRISTCHURCH. May 12. The wet spell which set in at the end of last week shows no sign of clearing. Heavy rain fell last night, and though it was lighter this morning, there was not much break. . The plough is out of commission, and most of the work was done on the sand. A few of the horses who are to race at Oamaru went on the No. 6 grass, which was heavy, and their tasks were not serious Many of the trainers were absent, contenting themselves with road exerCi T H. Gillett has made a change in his'plans for the North Island trip. It is probable that he will not leave till next Tuesday, and he will take only Dividend, with I. Walther to ride him in hurdle races at Waikato and Auckland. Palfrey will have an easy time for a few weeks as his trainer is hopeful about his staying prospects for next season. With Palfrey’s North Island trip cancelled, A. Messervy will be riding at Oamaru. ' . .. , Though she is an acceptor, it is not certain that Erambie will go to Oamaru. She is very well, however, and it looks as if she has benefited by her recent racing. On the form she showed at Ashburton, where she was second over a mile, she should be hard to beat if she is started in the seven-furlong event at Oamaru. It is an apprentice race, and she will be ridden by S. Bell, who won the Great Easter Handicap on Scottish Dale. J. C. Tomkinson has been laid up for a few days with Influenza. Atreus and Renarde have finished racing for this season, and they will have a spell. The imported horse Parchment is back in C. C. McCarthy’s stable, looking In great health after spelling for nearly four months In the North Island. He should be a good horse for important races over a distance next season.
