"ERGOT TUESDAY"

" It is hoped that by this time most of the children attending schools in the vicinity of Dunedin will have been told by their teachers about ' Ergot Tuesday,' April 28." said an officer of the Department of Agriculture yesterday. "On this day school children are being asked to bring to school any small" quantities of ergot that have been collected by them and which arc too small for them to market in the usual wav. By collecting the ergot in this manner the efforts made by the children will be put to a useful purpose. Without such a collection it is certain that the efforts of many would be wasted.

"Although most of the ergot appears to have been collected from the marram grass in the immediate vicinity of Dunedin. reports reaching the Department of Agriculture indicate quite clearly that an appreciable amount of ergot is still left in the marram grass on beaches such as Hooper's Inlet. Waikouaiti. Warrington and Karitane It is. therefore, hoped that any persons —children or otherwise—who live in the vicinity of such beaches will make an endeavour to collect some more ergot before next Tuesday, in order that the collection made at the schools on that day will be as large as possible.''
