MUFTI ALLOWANCE
PAYMENT TO ALL FORCES HOME SERVICEMEN TO BENEFIT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Apl. 20. Following the representations made by the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council through the National Patriotic Society, the War Cabinet has approved of the payment of mufti allowances to members of all armed forces on their discharge, including certain of those who have not left New Zealand. In the past such allowances have been payable only to returning members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Until last November the amount was £7 10s, but this was increased retrospectively to £l2 10s at a total cost of £IO,OOO.
Advice received by the chairman of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council, Mr J. A. C. Allum, states that the allowance of £l2 10s has been extended to members of the navy and Air Force returning from overseas. The extension is made retrospective to the outbreak of the war. In addition, the War Cabinet has approved of an allowance of £7 10s to members of the three services who have not served overseas, but have given full-time and continuous service for 12 months prior to their discharge. This authority operates on and after. April 1, 1942. In the event of any former member of the forces joining up and serving for a further 12 months, no further similar grant is to be made. The following sections of the military forces are covered by the authority:—Territorial force, temporary sta(T, temporary employment section, guards of vital points, Army Nursing Service, Women's War Service Auxiliary, and Home Guard. No officer or man discharged or placed on leave without pay prior to April 1, 1942, is entitled to the £7 10s allowance.
