HEAVILY BOMBED
ISLAND OF CORREGIDOR CONCENTRATED ATTACKS (Rec, 7 p.m.) RUGBY, Apl. 12. Heavy bombing of Corregidor is reported in the United Stales war communique issued on Saturday, which states that in the Philippine theatre, Japanese planes raided Corregidor 12 times in the past 24 hours. The attacks were concentrated on the centre of the island. “ Our fire kept the bombers at a high altitude. As a result, the damage inflicted by the enemy was light, and only a few casualties were suffered by our troops. Enemy batteries on Batan and Cavite fired on our fortifications this morning.” According to the Tokio radio, the commander of the American forces in the Philippines, Lieutenant-general J. Wainwright. narrowly escaped capture by the Japanese on Wednesday while escaping from Batan to Corregidor. The general was a passenger on one of three transports carrying American officers with their families. The vessels were dashing to the fortress when they were discovered by Japanese naval units. Two of the transports- were captured, but the one on which General Wainwright was travelling escaped.
