HOTEL DESTROYED BY FIRE

£. OCCUPANTS’ HURRIED ESCAPE (P.A.) PALMERSTON N„ Mar. 2. Damage estimated at between £SOOO and £6OOO was caused this morning when fire razed an hotel at Longburn and an adjoining house. The hotel, which was about 35 years old, was owned by the Fraser estate. The licensee is Mr Alastair Macdonald.

The occupants of the hotel, including two wopaen and six children, escaped hurriedly, losing everything. A strong wind, varying in direction, assisted the fire, which cut off the electric and water supply and telephone lines over, a wide area, and also affected the power supply. The house was occupied by Mr W. Hay, an employee on the raijway, and was owned by Mr O. Upton, of Waipawa.
