SCHOOLBOY INVENTOR

PROTECTION FOR GUNNERS ADELAIDE, Feb. 12. The youngest inventor ever to put an idea before the army in South Australia is 13-year-old John Campbell. He cycled down from Adelaide Hills to show the District Commandant, Brigadier Bundock, and the secretary of the War Inventions Board, Captain G. A. Paul, a cover he has invented to protect machine-gun-ners. John's father is a machine-gun-ner in the A.1.F., and the boy thinks his idea will help to save the lives of some of these men. He has not put a price on it. He is leaving that to the army. He said he thought of the idea just before the school broke up, and worked on it during the holidays. The cover is about 4ft square, and gives protection to the gunners from the sides and overhead. It has a swivel enabling the gun to be manoeuvred. The device is to be referred to the Inventions Board.
