D.F.C. FOR NEW ZEALANDER TOOK PART IN CHANNEL BATTLE (P.A.) AUCKLAND. Mar. 2. According to advice received by his parents, the Distinguished Flying Cross has been awarded to Flight Lieutenant Garry H. Francis. Flight Lieutenant „Francis took part in the recent Channel battle against the Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, and Prinz Eugen, and during it destroyed a Focke-Wulfe aeroplane. Later, his flight of the New Zealand Fighter Squadron ran out of ammunition and he led it back to England unharmed Flight Lieutenant Francis is aged 25 and Is an old boy of the Takapuna Grammar School. He left New Zealand in August. 1940. and qualified as a fighter pilot in Britain. He was a member of the City of Glasgow Squadron at the time the New Zealand Fighter Squadron was established in March of last year and has been flying in the latter ever since. He is well known in Auckland Rugby circles and was a prominent member of the Grammar Old Boys’ Club
