ENEMY IN BURMA
NEARER SITTANG RIVER AIR SUPPORT FOR DEFENCE A HEARTENING INCREASE (Rec. 10.50 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 23. The Rangoon correspondent of the Daily Mail says the Japanese are drawing nearer to the Sittang River, and heavy lighting continues. The main Japanese thrust appears to be towards Kyaikto, which is virtually at the mouth of the Sittang. Information reaching London shows that the British forces have withdrawn from the Bilin River position and are between that river and the Sittang River. A fairly long column of Japanese troops advancing from Bilin to Kyaikto. at the head of the Gulf of Martaban, has been successfully bombed and machine-gunned from the air. This demonstration of air activity is reported by the (British commander, General Hutton, to be having a good effect on the spirits of the troops, who, though naturally tired, are fighting with more confidence because of the evidence of increased air support.
