CRETAN GUERRILLAS
ATTACKS ON GERMAN POSTS NEW REPRESSIVE MEASURES (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 23. The Daily Telegraph says that since the occupation of Crete the Germans have made every effort to shroud the island in secrecy, but according to Greek circles in London the plan of the Nazis has met with as little success as the subjugation of the Cretan guerrillas. These irregulars, long since blood brothers of the British and Dominion soldiers who are still at liberty in the mountain fastnesses, range the island at night attacking enemy posts and communications. Their activities have so increased that the Germans are forced to adopt new repressive measures. Axis forces; mostly Germans, have been drafted to the island to inflict retaliation on the inhabitants. One village was cleared of its population because the people were suspected of aiding the patriots. One hundred people from central Crete and Candia were sent to Heraklion as hostages.
