MR F. I. JONES

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 9. The death has occurred in Wanganui at the age of 85, of Mr Frederick Ireson Jones, a well-known .dealer in books relating to New Zealand. Born in Wanganui, he was living there during Titokowaru’s war, when the women and children went to a blockhouse for safety at night. Few people were better known to those interested in New Zealand literature than Mr Jones, who travelled the country in search of old books, especially rare ones. He was apprenticed to a large firm in the book trade in Melbourne In 1873, but for the last 10 years had devoted his energies chiefly to old . New Zealand books, for which there is a demand in Australia and Britain. The New Zealand books that he had handled in his lifetime would have made a unique collection, but. he was more dealer than collector, and many" of his sales were made to persons overseas.
