BURNSIDE SALE

IMPROVED VALUES FOR BEEF SHEEP MARKET EASIER A smaller entry in the beef section resulted in an improved sale at the Burnside market yesterday. This was most' noticeable in the prime and prime medium ox classes, while the ordinary and light did not show such improvement. Cows and heifers, which were in over-supplv, met with a rather dragging sale. Fat lambs sold freely but were barely up to last week's prices. Baconers were firm but porkers were erratic and could be quoted easier. Fat Cattle,—The entry totalled 275 head, compared with 370 last week. The decline in the numbers resulted in an improved tone, particularly for the prime sorts while medium ana ordinai-y sold at last week's values. The sale could be described as a most erratic one, last week's drop of 30s a head being fully recovered in the early stages, while towards the conclusion of the sale the market eased to the extent of 10s a head on last week's ruling rates. On the average ox could be quoted at 10s improvement. The quality was mostly prime medium, prime and extra prime not being in evidence. Cows and heifers were in over supply and met with poor competition. The decline on these was 15s to 20s a head. Quotations: Extra prime bullocks, to £lB 7s 6d; prime, £ls 2s 6d to £l6 12s 6d; medium, £ll 12s 6d to £l2 17s 6d; light, £8 17s 6d to £lO 12s 6d; extra prime cows and heifers, to £lO 2s 6d; prime, £6 17s 6d to £8; medium, £5 to £6 2s 6d; light, from £3 15s Fat Sheep.—An overflow yarding numbering 2750 was offered. The yarding consisted principally of ewes, and although there was a number of pens of prime quality, the bulk of the yarding comprised medium and lighter sorts. Wethers were forward in larger numbers than usual. Owing to the overflow yarding competition was poor, and all prime classes showed a decided drop Prime heavy ewes could be quoted at 3s lower, while wethers .showed a decline of 2s. The lighter grades, with the assistance of export buyers, did not show this decline. Quotations: Extra prime wethers, to 29s 3d; prime, 24s to 26s 6d; medium, 22s to 235; light, from 20s; extra prime ewes, to 15s 6d; prime, Us 6d to 13s 6d, medium, 10s to lis; light, from 9s 6d.
