THEFT OF CAMP FUNDS

FORMER ARMY OFFICER CHARGED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 28. A former lieutenant in the army, Richard Seymour Powell, aged 35, was placed on probation for two years by Mr Justice Callan in the Supreme Court to-day, and ordered to pay £lO towards the expenses of the prosecution. He was charged with the theft of £SO belonging to the regimental funds of a mobilisation camp. His Honor said it was not a case of dishonesty in the ordinary way, but was due to the covering up of slackness which was caused by excessive work and ill-health. The prisoner had not sought personal gain, but had abused the trust reposed in bim. Counsel for the defence said that Powell still owed £IOO for which, he was liable to account, and had assigned his superannuation to cover this sum.
