MID-CANTERBURY SEAT

NATIONAL PARTY NOMINATION WIDOW OF MAJOR GRIGG (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 16. In response to a widespread desire on the part of all'branches of the National Party, Mrs Arthur Grigg, widow of Major Grigg, M.P., who was killed in action in Libya, has consented to allow her name to go forward for selection as the official National Party candidate for the Mid-Canterbury byelection. , Making the announcement, Mr T. N. Gibbs, deputy chairman of the Canterbury Division of the National Party, said there had been a universal call from all parts of the Mid-Canterbury electorate that Mrs Grigg should,be nominated. These representations had been made to Mrs Grigg, who was assured that the request was backed by keen enthusiasm from the entire electorate. Mrs Grigg had now consented to submit her name to the selection ballot should one be necessary. Mr Gibbs explained that the desire that Mrs Grigg should be a candidate was so general that he did not. anticipate there would be > any other nomination received, and as the Labour Party had announced its decision not to contest the by-election, it was unlikely that there would be a contest. Mrs Grigg would then be elected unopposed. Mrs Grigg has had local body experience, and created something of a record by topping the poll at the last election for the Ashburton Hospital Board and by becoming its first woman member. She is the third daughter of Mrs J. Cracroft Wilson, well known for her keen interest in numerous public activities, particularly those associated with women's interests, and is the granddaughter of Sir John Hall, a former Premier of New Zealand. Mrs Grigg has been president of the Ashburton Plunket Society. She is a mem-, ber of the Red Cross Executive, the Government-representative on the Ashburton High School Board, and president of the Ladies' Guild at Mount Somers. She has three children, and during the last war did three years' active nursing service as a V.A, She is an accomplished public.speaker^;;
