A sitting of the Port Chalmers Magistrate's Court was held yesterday before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M. Judgment byi default was. given for plaintiffs in the following cases:—Waikouaiti County Council v. Bertie Beatty, claim £2 4s 9d, balance of rates due, with costs (13s 6d>; T. J. Harrison v. J. Cotton, claim £l3 7s Id for goods supplied, with costs (£1 17s). ~ ,„ Stanley Gilbert Cook, for whom Mr W. J. Meade appeared, was charged with failing to pay his registration levy.—The case was adjourned until January 23. .. David Craig, who pleaded guilty to a charge of being in possession of liquor in the vicinity of a dance hall at Seacliff. was fined 40s and costs (10s). A voung man. whose name was suppressed in the meantime, pleaded not guilty to failing to enrol in the first division of the general reserve. He was represented by Mr C. J. L. White, who said the defendant was an orphan and did not know what his age was. He had been under the impression that he was not required to register until he was 21 years of age and recently, believing that he had reached that age, had enrolled, with the result that he had been called up in the latest ballot for overseas service. Actually, there was reason to believe that he was not yet 21. The proceedings had been brought as the result of the attention directed to his case by his attempt to enrol Counsel submitted that in order to prove the charge the police would have to establish the actual age Of the defendant.—The police admitted that they were unable to do so.—The case was adjourned until the sitting of the court in February, the magistrate remarking that it would be dismissed if the defendant were accepted for service in the meantime.
