break of war. He was educated at the High Street School and Waitaki Boys’ High School, where he matriculated at the age of 14. His preliminary air training was received at the Taieri aerodrome, and, after a course at Wigram, he left to join the R.A.F. in April. 1938. Up to June last, he had had no fewer than 50 operational flights over enemy territory. The citation in respect of the award of the D.F.C. to him early this year stated that he had carried out operations with conspicuous success and devotion to duty and with great determination and gallantry.
