PRISON WARDERS
SOCIAL IMPORTANCE OF WORK MILITARY SERVICE APPEAL (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. Reference to the disturbances at the Mount Eden gaol in October last year was made by the Director of National Service (Mr J. S. Hunter) in a letter read before the Armed Forces Appeal Board to-day emphasising the necessity for adequately and safely staffing institutions of the Prisons Department. The director’s request for an adjourn•ment sine die on behalf of William Roy Stanley, a prison warden, was granted. The letter stressed the difficulty experienced in obtaining the services of men physically and in other ways suitable for the exacting work required of them by the department. The disturbances at the Mount Eden gaol indicated the difficult and onerous nature of the service in these circumstances, and, in consideration of the fact that it was of extreme social imjwrtanoe to the Dominion to - ensure thgt an-’ade-.quateiStaff was available to the,Pnsons Department to permit? the safe and efficient operation ,of .Its institutions 1 , it was recommended that the calling up of this reservist should be adjourned sine die. . . . . - ■
