HILLSIDE WORKERS
. SERVICE OBLIGATIONS REPLY TO GENERAL MANAGER At a special meeting of the Hillside Branch Committee yesterday the following statement was authorised to be issued in answer to the statement of the general manager of the railways (Mr E. Casey) on the subject of military and national service:— "First, we agree that the Railways Department has not prevented or hindered the tinsmith concerned from joining the armed forces, but nevertheless he has been prevented from joining the armed forces by the Director of National Service, while at the same time a married casual tinsmith has been dismissed from the service. "Secondly, the reason given by the general manager for this married man's dismissal was that he was required by a private firm for more essential work. This has proved to be incorrect, and the committee is of the opinion that this man should be reinstated."
