SWIMMING

ANNUAL MEETING OF CENTRE WARTIME SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS SUGGESTED At the annual meeting-of the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association last night Mr S. Brown was elected president in succession to Mr W. A. Jenkins. Twentytwo other delegates were present. The Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr W. E. Parry, wrote congratulating the centre on its annual report, and the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) apologised for his nonattendance. Annual Report Moving the adoption of the annual report, the president congratulated all the clubs on the progress they had made. Two new clubs —Port Chalmers and Clinton—had been affiliated to the centre during the year. He said that he did not wish those clubs who had been hard hit financially during the year to withdraw from the centre. The New Zealand Council had decided to refund affiliation fees to clubs which had suffered in this respect, provided application was made annually, and this practice was being followed by the centre. Competitive swimming had not been neglected during the year, and most clubs had staged club carnivals. To help country clubs, the centre had decided last year to hold the country clubs' championships at Dunedin, and would do so this season if the country clubs desired it to do so. The centre was also prepared to meet the expenses of such a carnival over and above the gate takings. The Otago Centre, Mr Jenkins said, was now the largest centre in New Zealand, followed by Auckland, and this was a matter for gratification. The Southland Centre, an offshoot of the Otago body, had taken the War Memorial Shield from Otago last season. The speaker urged clubs to stage carnivals at the St. Clair baths. Fixtures held there previously had been a success. He expressed regret that the patron of the centre. Captain J. L. Mclndoe, had been reported to be a prisoner of war. Sergeant N. McTaggart, the son of Mr and Mrs J. McTaggart, had also been reported a prisoner of war. The report and balance sheet were adopted. Officers Appointed Officers were appointed as follows: Patron, Captain J. L. Mclndoe; deputychairman, Mr E. H. James; vice-presi-dents—Messrs W. A. Jenkins, E. H. James, D. C. Bannatyne, U. Walker, D. F. Watson, G. Mcßrlde, G. H. Peat, J. McTaggart, A. Greig. E. Sonntag, W. S. McEwen and D. Pickard; hon. secretary, Mr E. C. Isaacs; hon. treasurer, Mr W. A. Jenkins; hon. educational officer, Mr Di C. Bannatyne; hon. handicapper, Mr D. Pickard; hon. starter, Mr W. A. Jenkins; hon. auditor. Mr N. M. Sutherland; hon. solicitors, Messrs C. J. L. Sonntag, with two more to be appointed; record clerks, Messrs G. Clark and L. R. Mcintosh. General Mr Isaacs moved, " that the practice of accepting challenges after the selection of the Otago team be discontinued."—Mr D. F. Watson seconded the motion, which was carried.—Mr Isaacs explained that the motion did not preclude country members from being included in the Otago team, and Mr Jenkins explained that the team did not necessarily include all the Otago champions. Country clubs could safeguard themselves by bringing to the notice of the centre those swimmers who in their opinion merited Inclusion in the team. It was decided to hold the country championships at Dunedin on February 21, and the Otago championships on December 9 and 10. It was decided to recommend to the incoming committee that in view of the number of intermediates who had entered senior ranks this year the committee should favourably consider the staging of special war-time championships to encourage such swimmers. It was decided to hold the annual Batt fJup Harbour Race at Vauxhall on a date o be fixed by the incoming committee. Ordinary Meeting An ordinary meeting of the centre was held after the annual meeting, Mr S. Brown presiding. Permission to hold carnivals was given as follows: Kiwi Club, November 6 (iriterclub), and November 13 (annual presspolice); Balclutha Club. December 13 and February 28.
