LATE NEWS
THE CENTRAL SECTOR TERRIFIC NAZI ONSLAUGHT LONDON, Oct. 10. Latest reports of the fighting in the central sector of the Russian front suggest that the Germans have made little if any progress during the past 24 hours. Division after division has been hurled into the attack, and the losses in men, tanks, aeroplanes and equipment has been enormous. Vyazma, 130 miles to the west of Moscow, is still holding out, and German attempts to capture it have been frustrated. The Germans claim to have encircled a large proportion of the Russian army within the pincer attack. While this is admitted to be possible, it is pointed out that within the arms of the pincer movement are large pockets of troops capable of putting up a strong fight, while outside the arms are strong sections of the Russian army which the Germans have not been able to overcome. RUSSIANS DETERMINED FIGHT TO A FINISH (Rec. 1 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 10. The British and American missions to Russia returned to London on October 9. Lord Beaverbrook declined to talk about the conference except to say that the Russians were stout-hearted people. Admiral Stanley, ,of the American mission, said the Russians are not downhearted and say that even if the Germans succeed in taking Moscow they will prepare to move the line back and continue. “ I am certain that they will fight to a finish.” The Vichy radio says a message from Berlin stated that Melitopol has been captured.
