ROXBURGH
Borough Council.— I The Deputy Mayor, Cr T Walghth, presided at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council. The Main Highways Council wrote stating that the serving of notices regarding noxious weeds on highways in the borough area could be left to the council to attend to. —The Defence Department advised that owing to unforseen ■ developments the week-end bivouac would not be held at Roxburgh, and thanked the council for offering the sports ground free of charge. —The Public Works Department advised that the 200 ft of fire hose ordered by the council had been sent on.—The Works Committee reported on the water supply. stating that k test had been made to ascertain the pressure of water at the health camp when a heavy demand was being made on the water elsewhere in the borough. This test had proved successful, and it was shown that a good pressure was available at the health camp. The committee had considered the question of maintaining a clean water supply even under flood conditions. There were two ways of providing a supply of clean water—by a much larger reservoir and by installing a pump for which a shaft had been sunk. This should prove a much cheaper method, and the committee recommended that a pump be installed at the earliest opportunity. The report was adopted, and the committee was authorised to secure information regarding the installation of a suitable pump. Home Guard Activities.—The Home Guard held its first parade shoot on Saturday last. Each member of the guard fired five rounds grouping and five rounds application. Several members of the guard proved good marksmen, and with further opportunities other members should improve their shooting capabilities. The range was 25 yards, with .303 ammunition, the target used being the ordinary 200 yards target scaled down to 25 yards. The shoot was carried out in good time, and 62 members of D Company took part. Personal. —Warrant Officer T. Sanctes, who has been training at Trentham. returned home during the week-end.
