THE CAMPAIGN IN BRITAIN A MAGNIFICENT RESPONSE RUGBY. Oct. 6. The raising of £1,000,000,000 in the -war savings campaign was celebrated by a luncheon given by the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Sir Kingsley Wood). A message from the King congratulating the committee of the savings campaign was read, *in which His Majesty recalled that 18 months ago he sent - a message on the occasion of the first £IOO.OOOOOO being completed. Speaking at the luncheon, Sir Kingsley Wood recalled that the magnificent total now reached had been attained by small savings, and represented an amount equal to £2O per head of population. ‘ Remarking that a true com- - parison with the last war was not easy, because the campaign was hot under way until 1916, he reminded his •udienoe that by the end of 1918 about £274,000,000 had been subscribed by . small savers, and said the result now - acached more than matched the higher •ost of the present war over the last; While ; congratulating the small savers of the country on reaching this vast sum within two years, the Chancellor said he regarded it as no more than the first instalment.
