SHORT OF QUOTA

ACREAGE FOR LINEN FLAX FIGURES FOR SOUTHLAND (Special) INVERCARGILL. Sept. 26. No appreciable increase has occurred during the past week in the area of land offered for linen flax crops in Southland, and in the Winton, Otautau, Woodlands, Gore, and Tapanui districts there is still a shortage of more than 2000 acres. As the time for sowing seed is very near, it is unlikely that farmers could prepare any more land in time for a crop this year, and the area of 5300 acres for which contracts have been arranged in the five districts must be regarded as the final figures. The Southland response has been almost 30 per cent, below the quota fixed for the province.
