STATE HOUSES

CRITICISM BY WOMEN

,"Square boxes with holes-in them" was the description-applied to State houses by a member of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Women when remits for presentation at the Dominion conference of the council next month were under consideration.

The remit, out of which arose considerable criticism of State houses, suggested that the Government should be requested to make adequate provision for housing people with children. . It was pointed out at the meeting that a serious defect in the State houses was the lack of proper open air porches where children could play and where clothes could _be aired in sunlight once they were taken off the line. The suggestion that a woman architect was needed to assist in the planning of the houses came from one member of the council, while another considered that the smallness of the houses would encourage the limiting of families.
