S. Jackson and 684 others. of Christchurch, asking for an increase in the age benefit and, the allowable income under the Social Security Act to meet the increased cost of living Mr j; A. Lee (Democratic Labour. Grey Lynn) said he regretted that the committee was not able to report favourably.- ,; It seemed to him that the, old people had at least a case for a 5 o'er-, cent, increase in their allowances..: Atf this was. a matter or policy, he trusted that the Government, instead; of hardening ..its heart, wpuln temper the wind to old-age pensioners. , "Of course the member for Grey Lynn knows that as a question of Government policy is involved, the report, of the committee is a correct one, replied Mr F. W. Schramm (Govt . Auckland. East). “ I would not like it to be thought that the committee is not as sympathetic as the member r° r Grey Lynn.” \ •
