ALTERNATIVE SERVICE
HOME GUARD DUTIES apparent OF ORDERS (P*A.) ’. - AUCKLAND. Aug. 28! -The apparent -futility, pf the.. Armed Forces Appeal Boards’ ordering reservists to join the Home Guard as an. alternative form of: defence duties, when appeals. against ' Overseas service ; are granted, 'was mentioned by the chairman of the No; 1 Board, Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M.,‘ at to-day’s sitting. He said the boards had been instructed to direct successful to undertake such duties. . . ; ‘ ; ; ;“ I am' given to understand that in some; districts there is ho compulsion on Home Guard members to attend parades,” the chairman said. “In such circumstances, it would seem that any orders the board makes would be useless.” ■ < -
Mr F. J. Cox, the Crown representative, said it was ofily. recently that the Territorials had been ordered to attend parades. . With the prospect of the Home Guard coming under military control, a. similar provision was hot-unlikely. The' chairman said the board was under /the impression that if it made ah order the reservist would be doing his little bit in defence of his country. .“The whole purpose o| any order is wasted if the orders are. not earned out." he added, asking Mr Cox to make inquiries into .the position for the board’s guidance.
