THE Y.M.C.A.
The people of Dunedin will be afforded an opportunity to-day of expressing their appreciation of the service which the Young Men’s Christian Association is rendering in the community. The service is of a nature that necessitates an expenditure on a scale which is not covered by the revenues ordinarily accruing to the Association but in large measure takes a form that makes a direct appeal to the sympathies of the public. Especially is this the case at the present time, for both, in the military camps and its own premises the Association provides amenities for soldiers and volunteers that have greatly contributed to their enjoyment of their week-end leave. For it has been of no small value to them that they have been able to depend on securing accommodation of a suitable kind at a modest cost and their tribute to , the service which has been provided for them in this respect has actually been conveyed in the fact that the accommodation has frequently. been over-taxed. In the military camps throughout the Dominion the Y.M.C.A. has become an established institution. Its experience in catering for the requirements of the men who are being trained has enabled it to furnish a service for which there can be nothing but praise. Nor is it possible to overestimate the value of the work which the Association performs in meeting the social needs of lads in civil life. The; statistics of the numbers of bpy;s who are in daijy and nightly contact ; with the organisation are most impressive. It is for the support of work of this character that the will; be made to-day to the liberality of the public. The whole of the proceeds of the collection will be applied to the cost of maintaining the admirable local service of the Association.
