FISHING CENTRE DEPRIVED OF SUPPLIES “BLOATERS TO YARMOUTH” (P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 27. Although Kaikoura is a fishing centre, the fish supplies for the Kaikoura Hospital cannot be obtained there. They have to be bought in Christchurch, and sent to the hospital by railway and bus. , ~ “There is something that doesnt read sense in this,” said Mr F,,W. Freeman, when a report on these facts was before the North Canterbury Hospital Board to-day. “The position there is, to my mind, like bringing back bloaters to Yarmouth. Kaikoura is a noted fishing ground, and the report we have reads more like fiction than. fact. This taking of fish from Kaikoura to other places and the sending of it back there again is another instance of the ineffectiveness of the marketing control system.” The chairman (Mr L. B. Evans) said that the board was trying to make the best arrangements it could. Mr R. A, Mould (Banks Peninsula): The position is the same at Akaroa. There are case loads of fish coming from there, but, you can’t get fish there for love nor money, unless you go and fish for It yourself. Mr F. J. Monk (Kaikoura): This is due to the regulations. We have got to come to Christchurch to buy fish caught over the end of our own wharf. Even the local fish man has to buy from Christchurch. Mr Evans: I used to see the Rangiora fish man selling fish in Kaikoura. Mr Monk said that up to Is 6d ( per lb was paid for fish in Kaikoura. It was impossible for the hospital to be sure of its supplies. Mr J. S. Barnett: Couldn’t you send a porter down fishing?
