PRESBYTERY OF CLUTHA

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH On Friday last the Presbytery of Clutha met in the Balclutha Sunday School Hall. In the absence of the moderator (the Rev. O. T. Baragwanath), the Rev. W. McNeur presided. The presbytery passed motions of sympathy with Mr M. Girvan, of Lawrence, in the death of his wife, and with the relatives of Mr V. G. Chapman, general treasurer of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. The Rev. A. L. Cardno, who was recently inducted into the charge of Kaitangata, was welcomed to the presbytery. The Rev. A. R. Harper, of Owaka, was elected moderator of presbytery for .the ensuing six months. Correspondence was received from the Rev. O. T. Baragwanath asking that his resignation from the charge of Balclutha be accepted as from July 2, and his ..request was granted. The Rev. W. C. Comber, interim-moderator of the vacant charge, reported that the annual meeting of the\ congregation had been held and the terms of settlement agreed upon, so that immediate steps could be taken in effecting the settlement of a new minister at Balclutha.' ! The Rev. S. T. Nicholis reported on the visitation to the charge of Lawrence. The finding of the commission included reference to the good work being done there by the Rev. F. W. Winton. Consideration of the Assembly remits concerning the maintenance of the ministry proposals provoked a lengthy discussion. On the motion of Mr D. Finlayson, convener of the local committee. it was resolved to approve the Assembly recommendations that the existing minimum stipend of £2BO be' raised to £330, with commensurate benefits for home missionaries. ’ Brief reports of the recent missionary deputation given by Sister E. Reid and Miss A. M. Cook, showed that throughout the presbytery the response had been encouraging and attendances at the various meetings good. The results of this deputation revealed the wisdom of affording congregations first hand contact with missionaries home on furlough. Mr Cardno Avas appointed to the Youth Committee of Presbytery.
