OMAKAU

Golf.—On Saturday the ladies played a match for the Gridgman Trophy, the winner being Mrs Butcher with a card of 101 —30—71. Miss C. Harvey was runner-up with 89—13—76. Two matches for the president’s trophy were played during the week, Mrs Scorgie defeating Mrs Wilson and Mrs Oaten defeating Mrs Alpine. The following is the draw for this trophy on Saturday:—Miss J. Anglican Flower Show.—At a meeting of members of St. Mary’s Anglican Church it was decided to hold the annual flower show on a date to be fixed some time in January. A special effort is to be made to clear the remaining indebtedness of the building fund, and committees and stallholders were appointed. Several functions were arranged, including a bring and buy” sale. Rugby Football.—The Vincent Subunion’s annual seven-a-side tournament is to be held at Omakau on Saturday, matches to commence at 11 a.m. At the Maniototo Sub-union’s seven-a-side tournament at Ranfurly last Saturday successes achieved by local teams were: Under 17, Matakanui; Bantams, Omakau School.

LAWRENCE

Arbor Day Celebrations. —ldeal conditions prevailed on Arbor Day for the tree-planting ceremony, when over 180 silver birch trees were planted on Waitahuna road at the end of Whitehaven street. The pupils of the Lawrence District High School and St. Patrick’s School attended, and an Arbor Day address was given by the Mayor (Mr W. Suters). Valedictory. —A large attendance was present at St. Patrick’s Hall on Tuesday night to bid farewell to Father W. McDevitt. Presentations were made by Father Scanlan bn behalf of the people of Lawrence and surrounding districts, and by Mr Ryan on behalf of Waitahuna friends. Both speakers expressed regret at the guest’s impending departure, as his genial disposition had endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. Father McDevitt suitably replied. Opportunity was also taken to welcome Father Casey to the district. A musical programme was presented by pupils -of the Dominican Nuns, while' cards and dancing were also indulged in. Golf.— The honour of holing out in one has once again been accomplished on the local links, this time by Mrs B. S. Fulton, who has received many congratulations bn her feat. A Men’s Knock-out Competition will be played this week. Progressive Society. —At a meeting held in the Borough Council Chambers on Monday night, over which the Mayor (Mr W. Suters) presided, it was resolved to form a Lawrence Progressive Society. A discussion was held on wa'ys and means of improving the tourist attractions of the town. It was suggested that a reserve at present under lease should be acquired and added to the camping ground, thereby enlarging the grounds and providing a desirable shelter by the trees on the new portion. It was also suggested that a folder should be published setting out the attractions of Lawrence, the accommodation available, and other useful information to visitors. On the motion of Messrs McKinlay and McCutcheon, it was resolve'd that the meeting pledge its support to the Borough Council in its efforts to ■ establish an afforestation scheme in the district. It was decided that a committee of nine should be formed with the chairman and secretary in addition. Sub-committees for Finance, Advertising, and Accommodation were arranged with the Mayor as chairman in all cases. Mr Grey was appointed secretary and Mr Mair treasurer. Personal.— Miss Gladys Williams has been appointed to the staff of the Invercargill Post Office and commenced duty this week.

RANFURLY

Rugby Football.— The annual seven-a-side tournament of the Maniototo Rugby Football Sub-union was held at Ranfurly on Saturday. Conditions were ideal and the attendance was good. The tournament was played under the sectional system and as the result of the efficiency of the committee in control matches were played with a minimum of delay. The winner of the Black and White Cup. best three out of four medal rounds, was A. McLachlan with a net score of 213. Next week-end the competition will be a sealed hole medal round. The draw will be made at the clubhouse at 2 p.m. CLYDE Basketball.—The newly-formed basketball club had a try-out on Saturday, when friendly games were played on the lawn tennis courts against Alexandra teams. The local girls put up a good showing in their first attempt. The A team played two games, losing by 21—19 and 20—18. The B team was defeated by 25—2. Patriotic Function.— On Saturday the usual card tournament drew a good attendance, and the prize-winners were Mrs R. Reeves and Mr T. Farrell. The next session will be held on Friday night in conjunction with the “Hard-up” social.
