WAITAKI OLD GIRLS ANNUAL MEETING j The Oamaru branch of the Waitaki High I School Old Girls’ Association held its annual meeting in the Queen’s Hotel lounge recently, when there was a large attendance of members. The following committee was elected:— Mrs J. Meldrum, Misses C. Copland, E Marwick, K. Wilson, E. McLeod, J. Kent. J. Meldrum, L. Forbes, A. McKenzie and O. Irwin. The following members were elected as Oamaru branch delegates on the Dominion executive:—Mesdames Robertson and J. Meldrum. Misses Irwin, K. Wilson, H. Forrest and the secretary and treasurer. Miss C. Copland (president) extended a welcome to those present; especially the members from'the Dunedin branch. The following programme was presented :—Pianoforte solos, Misses M. Barclay and R. Brown; songs—Misses C. Miller D. Cayford and M. Hill; sword dance. Miss F. Miller; recitation, Miss E. McLeod: humorous sketch, Miss L. Forbes. Two competitions aroused much enthusiasm, and the winners were Misses E. Widdowson and M. Hill. Before supper was served, letters of thanks for Christmas cakes sent to old girls of Waitaki on active service were read, At the conclusion of the programme the president thanked the performers for the programme, and Mrs Monteath. the accompanist. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Tabic Tennis.—ln a B Grade table tennis competition match on Wednesday nightbetween South School 111 and Celtic 11, played at South School, the home team secured a' win by 22—10. Theosophlcal Address. —At his lecture in. the Peter Pan Theatre on Wednesday night. Mr Geoffrey Hodson stated that the Theosophical contribution to the great problem of life after death was twofold. First, Theosophy affirmed the immortality of the soul of man, and second, Theosophv affirmed that it was impossible to know the facts direct Throughout his address Mr Hodson stressed the importance of dissociating the inner self, the divine soul of man,, which was immortal, from its material manifestation, the body In which It was clothed on this earth. Rebekah Lodge.—The monthly meeting of the Rose of Oamaru Rebekah Lodge. 1.0.0. F.. was held on Tuesday. N.G. Sis. F. Hendry presiding over a fair attendance of members. Greetings were received from the Lily of Sydenham Lodge (Christchurch). Sis. Patterson reported that a play reading would be given at the next meeting. ■ vOamam Rotary Club.—Tracing' the movements of races and giving his deductions as to their significance. Mr Geoffrey Hodson gave anHnteresting and thoughtprovoking address at the weekly luncheon of the Oamaru Rotary Club. Rotarian President A. R. Tait presided, and a, vote of thanks was moved by. BASKETBALL STAR CLUB The Star Basketball Club held its annual meeting recently, Mrs J.'Meikle presiding over a good attendance of members. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patroness, Mrs H. S. Orbell: vicepatronesses—Mesdames Bee. Ericson, Petrie, Miss J. Carling: president. Mrs ,T. Meikle: vice-presidents—Sergeant-major D. McCurrie, Messrs R. E. Dimick and W. Couper; secretary. Miss S. Petrie; treasurer, Miss L. Petrie: delegate to North Otago Basketball Association. Miss J. Ericson: Social Committee—Misses B. Burns. The subscription of 2s 6d, the same as previously, was agreed to for the coming season. \ AMUSEMENTS MAJESTIC THEATRE “ Gancho Serenade.”—Gene Autry, the singing star of the saddle, has risen to the top of the popularity poll, and tonight and to-morrow night he is to appear in his latest musical western picture, " Gaucho Serenade.” In this he is ably supported by Smiley Burnette. June Storey, and Mary Lee. A Mexican musical fiesta is the highlight of this picture. OPERA HOUSE “ Doomed Caravan.”—Hooalong Cassidy is here again in all his glory, this time in the action-packed attraction ” Doomed Caravan.” This film centres around the famous pioneer wagon trains of the old days. Russell Hayden. Andy Clyde, and Minna Gombell are also in the cast. “ Dark Streets of Cairo.”—Thrills and adventures in the lands of the ancient Pharaohs are contained in this story, which will be shown to-night and tomorrow. Sigrid Gurie, Ralph Byrd. Katherine de Mille, George Zucco. and Eddie Quillan play the main roles. SHIPPING ACTIVITIES PORT OF OAMARU High Water.—May 30: 3,33 a.m. and 5.57 p.m. Coastal Movements The m.v. Storm will load at Oamaru or, Tuesday morning for Wellington, Picton and Wanganui. The Wainui is expected to load on Tuesday. June 10, for Wellington, Napier and Gisborne, via ports. The Waipahi will load on Tuesday, June 10, for Wellington, Nelson and New Plymouth, via ports. The Waipiata is due about Saturday. June 14, to load for Wellington and Auckland. via ports. PERSONAL Mrs G. A. Sutherland (Duntfoon) has received cabled advice that her son Alex, is safe and well. Members of the St. Patrick’s branch of the Hibernian Society met recently to bid farewell to Bro. J. Crowley, who is leaving Oamaru. Reference was made to the guest’s fine qualities, and a suitable presentation was made to him by Bro. D. Boland. Mr Crowley suitably replied. Visitors to the Town New Club Hotel. —Mr L. S. COLUMBA DRAMATIC SOCIETY MONTHLY READING There was a large attendance of members and friends at. the monthly meeting of the Columba Dramatic Society, which was held on Wednesday night. Mesdames F. Cleverley and K. Thomas had arranged a very interesting reading of “The-Late Christopher Bean.” by Emlyn Williams. Those taking part were: Mr J. H. Kemnltz (Dr Haggett), Miss Joan Benson (Susan Haggett), Miss A. Butterfield (Gwenny). Miss Loris Forbes (Ada Haggett). Mrs J. Jamieson (Mrs Haggett), Mr A. Lane (Tallant), Mr A. Rudduck (Bruce Mcßae). Mr F. Moyle (Rosen), Mr H. C. Cameron (Devonport). The hostesses for the evening were Misses Vera Smith and Mary Hill. I
