FATAL NEGLIGENCE
MOTORIST FINED £25 (P.A.) HAMILTON, Mav ]4. Having been found guilty yesterday on a charge of negligent driving causing the death of Myra Minnie Cootes at Hillcrest on March 13, William Reid Douglas, aged 27, of Morrinsville. appeared for sentence before Mr Justice Johnston in the Supreme Court to-day. " The prisoner's good record must be taken into account,” his Honor said, "The result of the voung man's negligence was serious, and normally speaking a term of imprisonment would be the proper penalty. Effect must be given, however, to the strong recommendation for mercy which was made by the jury." Douglas was fined £25 and was also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution, the total 1o be paid in monthly instalments of £5. His driving licence was cancelled for two years and he was ordered to take out a prohibition order for 12 months.
