SOUTH OTAGO
BALCLUTHA Potato Crops.—Potato growers in the Stivling-Inchclutha district have taken full advantage of the good weather of the past seven days and the mechanical potato-digger has been busy on many farms, with schoolboys from Balclutha and elsewhere helping with the pickingup and bagging. Where the boys are on piece work some have made up to £1 a day, but the average reward has been from 8s to 10s a day, according to the degree of skill shown. Growers are receiving much better prices than last year, up to £8 a ton on truck at Stirling for tire King Edward variety and £7 for Arran Chief. Some crops were sold forward at the beginning of the season for £6. The increased price this season may be attributed to the partial failure of the Canterbury crop through the recent floods in that province.
