PALMERSTON " Comforts for Fighters" Fund.—Last week a social afternoon, organised by the W.D.F.U., was held in the Town Hall in aid of the comforts appeal. Mrs D. Ross, president, extended a welcome to all present and invited Dr T. T. Thomas, chairman of the Appeal Committee, and Mr Andrew Fell, Mayor of Waikouaiti, to address the gathering on the objects of the appeal. The various stallholders were kept busy, and many competitions were held during the afternoon. Items were rendered during the function. As a result of the efforts of the W.D.F.U.. the " Comforts for Fighters " Fund will benefit to the extent of £39. Rugby Football.—ln spite of the difficulty in securing full teams, interesting football was seen in both matches on Saturday. At Dunback, the local side secured a narrow victory over the youthful Waikouaiti team by 11 points to 9. Waikouaiti almost made it a drawn game when, right on time, Malloch scored wide out, and Gunn's attempt at a conversion went just outside the upright. At Palmerston, Seacliff defeated Shag Point by 3 points to nil. Both sides were evenly matched, and a brilliant try by Orange in the second half gave Seacliff the victory. Air Force Band Visit—Dr T. T. Thomas and Messrs J. Mcßae, George Ross, and C. G. Warren met Flight Lieutenant. Gladstone Hill, conductor of, the Air Force Band, who was a passenger on the first express south on Monday, to interview him regarding the band's visit to Palmerston on Saturday next. Arrangements were made for the band to appear at Palmerston at 2.30 in the afternoon and render a programme in the showgrounds.
